Advances In Sports Medicine

In the past few years surgeries for sports related injuries have seen tremendous advances.  These include new implants, such as the internal brace.  This device allows patients with ankle instability to undergo surgery followed by a rapid rehabilitation protocol.  Patients no longer require long periods in a cast or prolonged periods of time on crutches.

Other advances include minimally invasive surgery for Achille’s tendon ruptures and certain fractures.  Arthroscopic surgery is now performed on joints other than the ankle.  This allows surgeons to treat a diverse set of injuries to the subtalar joint, the talonavicular joint, and the toes that previously required large surgical incisions.
